MUMBAI, September 8: Semester exams commence at Cathedral & John Connon School tomorrow, and the timetable reads that the XIth standard girls will take the Commerce paper. This weighed at the back of the minds of their U-19 squad participating in the Multigames city inter-college table tennis tournament at Don Bosco School, Matunga today. They played two gruelling ties, interspersed with a quick peek into notebooks, before facing RA Podar in the semifinal. Cathedral's No 1 player Shweta Kamdar, visibly tired, set up a close clash by knocking out Podar's best bet Shruti Doshi in straight games. She then paired with Shivani Kumar to win the doubles, but Cathedral lost the remaining three singles to bow out.
Podar went on to beat Jaihind 3-2 in the closely-fought finals, and qualified for the zonal championship.
In the final, Jaihind won the doubles in three games to force the decider between the weakest players on either team, Anumeha Bansal and Farzana Bharucha. The weak also serve, goes the proverb, andAnumeha underlined that by exposing Farzana's poor forehand to settle the issue for Podar.
In the boys U-17 final, Don Bosco, fielding State No 3 Sahil Kukreja, proved too strong for IES English. Sahil demolished Niranjan Kamat 21-6 21-3, and Alok Shah came back from 15-20 in the second game of the second singles to defeat Krishnapathik Nadkarni 21-11 22-20.
