No headway in power-loom talks

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SURAT, Sept 8: Even as power-loom owners decided on Tuesday evening to open their units from Wednesday, it is not certain whether workers will resume duties as meeting of representatives of trade unions, workers and the employers with the District Collector and police officials is deadlocked.

Trade unionists supporting agitating Udiyamalis assured the Collector and the police commissioner on Tuesday evening that the workers would resume duties if the loom owners agreed to open their units. Even as the announcement was being made by trade unionists, many leaders of the `Udiya Samaj' contended that they would not resume duties unless the 270 workers arrested by the police on Thursday for rioting are released.

Meanwhile, the Varachha Weavers' Association decided to open their units from Wednesday which had remained closed since Thursday, following a mob fury in Krishna Industrial Estate. Of the main demands were the arrest of Purshottam Tripathi, who was nabbed the same day and further booked under PASA on Monday evening. Tripathi has been sent to jail.

The meeting of representatives of the power-loom owners, union leaders and leaders of the `Udiya Samaj' with the Collector on Thursday evening drew a blank as a number of issues raised without hammering out anything. President of the Daxin Gujarat Trade Union Council Dashrath Nagar and other trade unionists Vijay Shenmare and Suresh Sonawane were present at the meeting, while Udiya Samaj leaders Abhimanyu Jena and Bansidhar Lenka were also present for the meeting.

While the union leaders demanded that the power-loom owners compensate labourers for their wages for six days since Thursday, the Udiya Samaj leaders wanted the 270 Udiyamalis released before they join back on duty again. The representatives failed to provide any assurance to the Udiyamalis.
