NEW DELHI, September 8: Five cremation grounds run by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) were raided by the vigilance department and records sealed following complaints. The raids were conducted at Nigambodh Ghat, Subhash Nagar, Inderpuri, Paschim Vihar and Punjabi Bagh cremation grounds and records of purchase of wood were seized. According to Municipal Corporation of Delhi officials, they had recieved several complaints of substandard wet wood being supplied by the contractors in connivance with the staff, less quantity of wood being apportioned and alleged misbehaviour of staff.
The alleged poor quality of wood being supplied has led to several clashes between the cremation ground staff and the public as the pyre could not be lit. As a result of the ``substandard'' quality of wood supplied, several shops selling dry wood have opened up in the vicinity of these cremation grounds.
The raids have revealed that the quantity of wood stored in the godowns at Nigambodh Ghat was much less than what was listed in the records. Officials have said that they suspect that all the wood that was being bought for use in the cremation ground was not actually reaching there. But they added that they are yet to complete their investigations before they canould say anything for sure. However, officials said that their investigations would not affect the services and the cremation grounds were still functioning.
