Sugar traders demand withdrawal of levy on sugar

MUMBAI, SEP 9: Leading sugar merchants of the city met the Minister for Co-operation, Jayaprakash Mundada today and requested him to withdraw the levy on sugar at the Agriculture Products Marketing Corporation (APMC) market.

The minister assured the president of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association, Mohan Gurnani and state Sena leader and a leading sugar merchant, Kanhayalal Gidwani that the matter would be looked into and necessary steps taken soon.

Gidwani told PTI the APMC market in Navi Numbai was charging one per cent levy on basic price of sugar and an octroi of around Rs 5 per bag.

They are scheduled to meet Mayor Nandu Satam tomorrow to request him not to increase octroi on sugar from 0.5 per cent to 1.0 per cent, which came into effect last month.
