Dual teams may unearth stars: Dungarpur

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, SEPTEMBER 9: The selection of two teams for the Commonwealth Games and the Sahara Cup may have been unprecedented in the annals of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) history, creating an unsavoury episode in the recent past. The BCCI chief Raj Singh Dungarpur, however, feels that ``there lies a silver lining in the selection of the teams.''

``Within the two teams there is every likelihood of two or three players emerging strong contenders for the World Cup,'' reasoned Dungarpur while speaking at the launch of the Prudential ICICI's cricket quiz website Pruhowzzat.com held at Cyber Cafe, Express Towers this afternoon.

Dwelling on the Indian team's preparations for the 1999 World Cup, Dungarpur said: ``I would like to say that we are 60 per cent prepared. We will have to cover the rest in the coming months.''

Expressing immense satisfaction at the 15-day preparatory camp at Chennai recently, Dungarpur opined: ``The team of physio Andrew Kokinos, team doctor Ravinder Chadha, skipper Mohammad Azharuddin, coach Anshuman Gaekwad and consultant Bobby Simpson have done a remarkable job. More importantly, the boys enjoyed it thoroughly.''

Later in an informal chat with newsmen, Dungarpur hinted at the possibility of the number of players per team at the World Cup being raised to 15, one more than the usual 14. ``We are awaiting confirmation (from the International Cricket Council) on this regard,'' he added.

Pruhowzzat features a series of Indian and cricket-related quizzes designed by BCCI statistician Mohandas Menon and will be presented on a weekly basis spread over 13 weeks, commencing today. Each quiz carries six questions presented in increasing order of difficulty. Participants can win from a total of 146 prizes -- 130 weekly prizes stretched over 13 weeks, 15 monthly prizes and one grand prize at the end of the series. The grand prize will be decided on the basis of the cumulative scores of the 13 quizzes.

The top ten winners of the weekly prize (Straight Drive) will get mousepads, T-shirts, caps etc., while five winners of the month (hook) will receive leather briefcases and inoxcrom pen sets worth $100 each. The grand prize winner will be awarded two free tickets and air fare to the final of a overs-limited international to be staged in India in February 1999.

Dungarpur, who logged in to become the first participant of the quiz series said: ``Pruhowzzat is a new and innovative concept to me which would definitely go a long way in promoting the spirit of cricket.''
