RSS unit plans to enhance swadeshi movement

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, SEPT 10: The Swadeshi Jagran Manch, the economic arm of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, is all set to elevate its nationalistic, anti-globalisation campaign to the level of a movement.

The SJM has decided to organise a `swadeshi chetana yatra' from Vishwakarama Jayanti, on September 17, to Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2). The entire Sangh parivar, including the BJP, VHP, BMS and the ABVP, will, during this period, focus its attention on creating awareness on the dangers of globalisation.

``The yatra's theme will be to build debt-free, fully employed and capable India,'' said BJP Rajya Sabha MP MC Sharma, who is also convenor of the 14-day campaign.

But Sharma was cornered while talking about the threat of WTO regime and the inability of the BJP-led government to withdraw from it. Had it been a BJP government, he said, it would have tread the swadeshi track. Did this mean that the coalition partners had become the stumbling block? He disagreed to this. He compounded confusionsaying, BJP was committed to swadeshi.

``Issues pertaining to the WTO, challenges to Indian Patent Act, role of foreign investment in achieving balanced development objectives on sustainable basis, cattle wealth protection to retain soil nutrients, fertility and ultimately decentralised, diversified agricultural systems, the role of MNCs and challenges on the cultural front will be taken up during this campaign,'' he added.

According to Sharma, since 1991, the country's economy was put on track. Successive governments pursued the same policies with minor variations. It resulted in, he said, the country's economy being globalised and her Constitutional and parliamentary sovereignty being compromised.

Under threat of World Trade Organisation regime, said he, the country's patent laws would have to be changed by April next, subsidies reduced and imports increased.
