No danger to government, says Vajpayee

PRESS TRUST OF INDIA
Lucknow, Sept 10: Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee today said there was no danger to his government and it would complete its full term as the people were satisfied with ``our performance.''

The Prime Minister, who arrived here on a two-day visit, said the people of the country were happy and satisfied with the performance of his government and all the opposition propaganda of a quick fall of the BJP-led government was just their ``wishful thinking.''

Addressing a gathering after dedicating to the people a community centre, Vajpayee said the people of the country were aware of the fact that the problems pending for the last 50 years cannot be solved within six months' period.

``But our government has been able to resolve the longstanding dispute over the Cauvery waters,'' he said adding that if honest efforts and initiatives were taken more such problems could be solved amicably.

Criticising the opposition parties for not playing a constructive role, Vajpayee said, ``we have been in the oppositionfor the last forty years and always backed the government's decision in national interests.''

During the first nuclear test at Pokhran in 1974, his party had come out openly in support of the nuclear test despite their differences with the government on several issues, he said.

``This time, however, the opposition parties had been very selective in lauding the government efforts to go nuclear'', he said.

He said the main consideration of the opposition parties after the tests was to ensure the BJP did not ``walk away'' with the credit of the tests.

Terming as ``false propaganda'' the reports that India has been isolated globally following the Pokhran tests this year, he said ``no power in the world can ignore a country as vast as ours.''

The Prime Minister denied the opposition charge that his government was deviating from the path of consensus on foreign policy.

He said continuous efforts had been made to evolve consensus on foreign policy, especially following the Pokhran nuclear tests but to noavail.

``The opposition parties were more concerned at grabbing power and not eager to cooperate with the government in any way,'' he said.

He said the exercise of opposition parties to topple his government would prove futile as the coalition government was firmly ensconced and was very strong.
