India 4 Jamaica 0KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 10: The 4-0 scoreline inclusive of a hat-trick by Pritam Rani against Jamaica in the women's hockey competition looks impressive enough. But the inability of the Indians to score more often from the 17 penalty corners they earned left a question mark against the team that is out to resurrect its image after the disaster at the World Cup in May.
India managed penalty corners by crowding tactics and needless aggression from the Jamaicans but only two goals resulted from them. The Jamaicans did succeed in not allowing the Indians to take too many shots at the goal.
Indian skipper Sita Gussain had a good game as did Suraj. Pritam Rani opened the account in the 14th minute when she deflected in a rebound following Mary Tirkey's first crack at the goal off a penalty corner. Five minutes later Pritam made good a fine ball from Nidhi Khullar to put India 2-0 up.
A stunning reverse flick from Pritam completed her hat-trick and in the second half, Sandeep Kaurconverted a penalty corner to complete the tally.
India's next match is against Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday. In other matches, Australia lashed the Scots, 6-0, while in a strange incident, the match between Wales and Canada, the game was put off because eight of the Welsh girls reporting ill.
New Zealand went on a scoring spree beating Namibia 15-1. Tina Bell-Kake scored six goals, Anna Lawrence, Mandy Smith got three each and Kate Trolove two. Suzie Pearce got one. Namibia lone goal came from Penny Ankama.
