Dehra Dun team score big win

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, September 11: DAV Inter-College, Dehra Dun (Uttar Pradesh), strengthened their quarterfinal chances from Group E with a 5-0 win over NCC XI in the Subroto Mukherjee Football Tournament at Ambedkar Stadium today. Their strongest rivals in the group, Christ Collegiate (Orissa) also had a big win against Port High School (Andhra Pradesh). Orissa won 8-0 and are strong contenders for the quarterfinal place from the group. Both teams are tied with six points but Dehra Dun side has a slender edge of one goal. In tomorrow's crucial tie between Orissa and UP will be the decider.

In Group F, Donyi Polo Vidya Bhawan (Arunachal Pradesh) humbled Motilal Nehru School of Sports, Rai (Haryana) 3-1. Arunachal's Tatin Medo drew the first blood in the fourth minute but Sanjeev Kaushik equalised for Haryana in the 28th minute. Haryana's joy was shortlived as Medo struck again in the 30th minute to give AP the lead which was further consolidated by Gomar Karlo in the 52nd minute.

After a dull and goalless firsthalf, UP went on a scoring spree from the start in the second half with Mohammad Taufeeq breaking the ice in the 31st minute and later scored the fifth goal for his side in the 58th minute. Taking advantage of a defensive lapse, an alert Rajesh Chauhan placed the ball in the 37th minute. Two minutes later, UP earned a penalty kick when NCC's Moses pulled Taufeeq down in the box. Balam Singh converted the penalty and struck again in the 41st minute to make it 4-0.

For Orissa, SK Fayaz (14th, 56th minutes), Santosh Rao (20th, 55th, 57th), Lalit Lakra (29th), Sarojkanta Pattnaik (33rd, 48th) were the scorers.
