Meghdoot Sengupta, a resident of Nauroji Nagar, said: ``Around 7 pm I got off at the Nauroji Nagar bus stop. I was walking through a dark stretch when two men ran towards me. They had lathis in their hand. I ran away from them. They abused and assaulted me. It was only when I showed them my press card that they stopped.''

According to him, the police refused to lodge an FIR saying that they had made a mistake as they were paranoid about the cop-killer.

The police said: ``Sengupta's face partially resembled the sketch of the cop-killer prepared by the police. We have not registered a proper case because it was a mistake. The policemen concerned have apologised to him''.
