Sampras to meet Rafter in semis
World number one Pete Sampras had his way with ninth seed Karol Kucera of Slovakia on a cold windy night at the US Open to set up a "super Saturday'' semifinal with defending champion Patrick Rafter. In reaching the semifinals for the sixth time in nine years, Sampras closed within two victories of his fifth US Open crown and a record-tying 12th Grand Slam singles title.

Former Australian Test off-spinner Tim May yesterday said it might be naive to think Pakistan was the only side involved in match fixing, adding that some former Indian players had alluded to its happening in other sides.

Billiards, football may face the axe at Asiad
Billiards, which has given India a host of world champions, is in danger of being knocked off the Bangkok Asian Games programme in December owing to paucity of entries.
