MUMBAI, SEPT 11: The division bench of Chief Justice M B Shah and Y S Jahagirdar refused to entertain a petition on Thursday filed by practising advocate R V Gangal urging the Bombay High Court to cut short the three-month jail sentence awarded to social worker Anna Hazare.Hazare was sentenced by the Girgaum metropolitan magistrate after he was found guilty of defaming state Social Welfare Minister Babanrao Gholap. Gangal pleaded in the BHC that Hazare's one-day stay in the jail be considered sufficient. He argued that Hazare was a respected figure in society and his imprisonment would hurt public sentiment.
The Chief Justice, however, did not take cognisance of the petition, and said it could not be treated as a public interest litigation.
