NEW YORK, Sept 11: French Open champion Carlos Moya made quick work of Magnus Larsson today, racing through an impressive victory to advance to the semifinals of the US Open tennis championships. The 10th-seeded Spaniard took just 90 minutes to beat the unseeded Swede 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 in windy, cool conditions at the National Tennis Centre.
Moya, who survived five-set struggles against Americans Michael Chang and Jan-Michael Gambill in the early rounds, was magnificent in the quarter-final. The 22-year-old fended off the lone break-point he faced in the match as he picked apart the overmatched Larsson.
Moya, who beat compatriot Alex Corretja in the French final and again here in the fourth round, had struggled since Roland Garros, losing early at Wimbledon and stumbling during most of the summer's hardcourt season.
But at the Open, he has gained momentum with each victory and looked fresh in today's romp on Arthur Ashe Stadium court.
Moya was in total control against Larsson, committing just 15unforced errors, three in the final set, against 41 for the Swede. Moya ended the match with a flourish, ripping his first ace of the match past the dazed Larsson.
``It was easier than I expected,'' said Moya, who will meet Mark Philippoussis of Australia next.
Three months after hitting rock bottom and thinking about taking a break, Philippoussis soared to new heights, beating Thomas Johansson in the epic 20-point fifth-set tie-breaker.
Philippoussis turned back three match points in the tie-breaker before finally rocketing a signature first-serve bullet that the Swede could not handle to claim the 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 titanic victory and a berth in his first Grand Slam final four yesterday.
``This match has definitely matured me,'' said the unseeded Australian after taking the final tie-breaker 12-10 on his second match point. Philippoussis, lived up to his nickname scud by blasting in 30 aces.
Johansson was despondent in seeing his chances of making his first Grand Slam final four slip away after beingso tantalizingly close.
The other men's semifinal is already set for Super Saturday with top-seeded Pete Sampras taking on third-seeded defending champion Patrick Rafter.
While elder sister Venus Williams entered the women's singles semis, sister Serena alongwith Max Mirnyl of Belarus won the mixed doubles crown. Williams-Mirnyl sent third-seeded pair of Lisa Raymond and Patrick Galbraith of the US 6-2, 6-2.
