Vidya Vikasini, Vasai veer to victory

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, SEPT 11: Vidya Vikasini, Vasai won the Inter-Schools Football under-14 Division II title when they got past St Stanislaus, Bandra 2-0 in the summit clash at the Mumbai Schools Sports Association's (MSSA) ground, Azad Maidan today.

In the Hard-lines Cup, Our Lady of Salvation, Dadar upstaged St Paul's, Dadar 2-0.

Despite a good start in the final, Stanislaus strikers failed to capitalise on the scoring chances that fell their way. On the other hand, Vikasini shot into lead against the run of the play. In the fifth minute, Ranju G Mathew tapped the ball in the empty net off a goalmouth melee.

The Vasai lads increased the lead in the 12th minute to make it 2-0. After a good run on the left wing, Swapnil Bhamble thumped a deadball into the goal.

In the second-half, the Bandra boys made many inroads in the Vasai school's defence but poor finishing undid their efforts.

This is second year in succession when Vidya Vikasini has been promoted to the next division. Last year, in the Division III finalthey lost to St Lawrence but were promoted to Division II as two finalists are promoted every year. This year they will be promoted to Division I along with St Stanislaus, Bandra.

In the hard-line duel, Our Lady of Salvation shot into lead in the 15th minute when Noel Correla scored off a delectable pass from Gavin Fernandes. The team from Dadar coached by Central Railway's Francis Fernandes, an ex-junior international, showed better control on the slushy ground. Atish Mewada, increased the tally, mid-way through the second session with a long-ranger.

Adrian Mascarenhas in defence was flawless and kept the St Paul strikers at bay.
