Mumbai, Sept 11: After the Governor Dr PC Alexander's unexpected move of summoning top bureaucrats yesterday to discuss state's finances, it was Chief Minister Manohar Joshi's turn to spring a surprise by calling on the Governor for an unscheduled and prolonged meeting at Raj Bhavan tonight.Joshi's meeting with Alexander assumes significance since the Governor, following reports in a section of the media alleging that the state was marching to bankruptcy, had summoned two senior officials - Principal Secretary (Finance) Ravi Bhushan Budhiraja and Principal Secretary (Planning) Vinay Bansal. Alexander had separate marathon meetings with these two officials.
Joshi himself sought to play down his meeting saying it was a routine one in which they discussed important issues. ``We also discussed the financial situation of the state,'' the Chief Minister told the The Indian Express. And sounding satisfied, Joshi said like his earlier meetings with the Governor, today also he was happy with thedeliberations.
Commenting on the Governor's decision to summon senior officials, Joshi said being the constitutional head of the state, he was well within his rights to summon bureaucrats to seek information from them. ``I feel that there is nothing wrong in the decision of the Governor. There have been instances in the past when the Governor has summoned senior bureaucrats to seek information on controversies,'' Joshi remarked.
Refusing to comment on the information given by the officials to the Governor. ``I do not know what the two officials told the Governor,'' he quipped.
However, according to reports, Budhiraja and Bansal did voice their concern over the financial situation of the state. Though Budhiraja was not available for comments, according to sources, he had prepared a detailed note on the financial situation of the state. Budhiraja is understood to have talked about lack of financial discipline in the state resulting in the unprecedented economic crisis. Based on his note, Finance MinisterMahadevrao Shivankar has also written a confidential letter to the Chief Minister on the economic crisis, a senior official said.
On his part, Joshi maintained that the financial situation was well under control and things were not as bad as being projected by the Opposition.
