CHANDIGARH, Sept 11: Students Organisation of Punjab University (SOPU) today became the first party to announce their candidate for the post of president for the forthcoming student elections at the Punjab University. An executive committee of SOPU today announced that it is renominating Dayal Partap Singh Randhawa "D.P." for the post of president. Randhawa was the runner up in the last university polls when he had polled 1,192 votes as against 1,466 of the winning candidate, Munish Anand. Randhawa today said so far only his nomination had been cleared by the executive and the rest would be announced shortly.
Meanwhile other parties also began their election campaign. While activists of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) began their campaign with the release of their publicity material, activists of National Student Union of India (NSUI) and the Panjab University Students Union (PUSU) turned the strike call at the university campus into an election campaign.
ABVP activists on the other hand are trying to capitalise on their organisational ability and the work done during the previous year. The state vice-president of ABVP, Arun Sood today blamed the rival organisations for the deteriorating academic atmosphere in the campus. While the university has announced the holding of elections, the provision of identity cards to all students is first on the university agenda. All departments have been asked to expedite the issuance of identity cards.
