CHANDIGARH, Sept 11: Western Command - the largest operational command of the Indian Army - will celebrate its 51st Raising Day on September 15.Raised at Delhi immediately after Independence on September 15, 1947, it was redesignated as Western Command in January 1948. The headquarters eventually moved to its present location at Chandimandir in 1985.Actively involved in the wars with Pakistan and China, the command not only blunted pre-emptive offences by Pakistan, but also achieved significant territorial gains.
Besides being involved in controlling militancy, the troops also assisted the civil administration in conducting peaceful elections during 1992.
