CHANDIGARH, Sept 11: The outgoing president of the Punjab University Campus Students' Council, Munish Anand, besides the campus unit president of the National Students Union of India, Sartaj Gill, were remanded to judicial custody till September 25 by UT Judicial Magistrate (Ist Class) Jag Nahar Singh, here today.The duo were allegedly accompanying Senate member and former student leader Kuljit Singh Nagra, when he fired at two office bearers of a rival students organisation on August 21. They were arrested by the Chandigarh Police yesterday evening in the same case.
They, along with Nagra and his gunman Asa Ram, have been booked for attempt to murder, rioting armed with deadly weapon by member of an unlawful assembly, besides Section 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.
According to the prosecution, a bullet fired by Nagra had injured a research scholar, Baljinder Singh Sangha, in his right ankle. The other shot had reportedly pierced through the trouser of SOPU president Dayal Pratap Singh Randhawa.
Today, arguing before the magistrate, the defence counsel stated that the accused were arrested for "adversely affecting the election process".
