3 killed as rains take city by storm

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, September 11: A ten-year-old boy was crushed to death under a tree which fell during the thunder storm in the north-west district on Friday evening. The incident took place near Shakti Apartment, Rohini, Sector IX. The boy, Munna, was rushed to the Pusa Nursing Home where he was declared dead.

In another incident, three men were electrocuted after a high tension wire collapsed because of the storm in Saroop Nagar, Samaipur Badli. Om Prakash was overseeing the construction of his building along with two labourers. The high-velocity winds caused the electric wires to fall on the construction, parts of which also collapsed. The men died on the spot. The labourers are yet to be identified.

According to the Met department, the thunder storm was localised and centered only in the north west district. There will be more thunder showers and cloudy weather tomorrow.

A major power breakdown occurred in the north-west Delhi around 2.30 p.m. when high velocity winds uprooted trees and damaged power lines to the Haidarpur water treatment plant. Water supply in the city is likely to be severely affected with no power available.

Senior Delhi Vidyut Board officials including chairman Virender Singh and member technical Y.P. Singh rushed to the spot. Board officials after inspecting the damage said that all the three sources of power to the water treatment plant were severely damaged as the conductors had fallen on the ground.

Though repair work was undertaken immediately, none of the officials were sure when the three sources of power -- two from the Shalimar grid and one from the Swaroop Nagar grid near Samaipur Badli would be rectified. Board spokesman Jagdish Kapoor said that one of the three sources would be rectified by midnight.

``Our main intention is to ensure that Haidarpur Treatment Plant comes back on the rails and water supply to the Capital is restored,'' he added. The repair works are to continue round the clock.

Meanwhile, a strong breeze blew over a few areas of the city today, bringing rains and a drop in temperatures. The Safdarjung Met office recorded 3.8 mm of rain and 1 mm of rain was registered at Palam. The shower is part of the monsoons, clarify Met Department officials.
