Police track Munna through cellphone

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NOIDA, September 11: Prem Prakash alias Munna Bajrangi, critically injured during a shootout with a joint team of UP and Delhi police, is involved in several cases of smuggling of arms, drugs and gold. An accused in more than 100 cases including dozens of murders, Bajrangi fell into the police net because of his cellphone.

Addressing a press conference here, Senior Superintendent of Police of Special Task Force (STF) Arun Kumar said that he was suspected to have abducted a person from Dubai and killed him in Uttar Pradesh.

He traced Bajrangi's criminal record. A resident of village Sureri of district Jaunpur, Bajrangi was a carpet weaver in Bhadoi till 1981 when poverty compelled him to quit and take up a job as a bus conductor.

He stepped into the underworld after he came in contact with the gang of Vinod Lamboo and Vinod Natoo of Jaunpur. He invited police attention in 1992 after he allegedly killed Block Pramukh Ram Chander Singh, his security guard and another person in a shootout in Jaunpur in broad daylight. In the same year, he allegedly killed another Block Pramukh, Kailash Dubey, in a public meeting in police presence. The local police's efforts compelled him to leave Jaunpur.

He came in contact with anothergangster Anil Singh, also a former deputy mayor of Varanasi. The two committed a number of murders including that of notorious Varanasi criminals Chhote Singh and Bade Singh in 1995. Anil Singh is currently serving time.

His notoriety brought him in contact with dreaded gangster and sitting BSP MLA Mukhtar Ansari who allegedly helped him become one of the top UP gangsters. Mukhtar introduced him to Khurshid, a notorious Mumbai-based smuggler of drugs and gold.

Bajrangi soon became a partner in the smuggling chain of Mukhtar Ansari, Khursheed, Sharad Shetty (a Mumbai-based builder and underworld don Dawood Ibrahim's associate) and Aniruddha Singh Jadoja, a dreaded arms peddler and the owner of a shipping company in Bhuj, Gujrat. Bajrangi was the first gangster to introduce AK-47 in eastern UP, said Kumar.

On Mukhtar's behest, Bajrangi abducted a relative of Aniruddha Singh from Dubai and allegedly killed him in UP. This case caused a rift to develop between Mukhtar and Bajrangi over division of money and Bajrangi started operating independently.

Bajrangi had recently bought a flat in the Borivali area of Mumbai and was living there with his family. But after the Special Task Force tightened its noose around him and picked up his brother-in-law and Khurshid, he shifted his base to the National Capital Region (NCR).

The police got Bajrangi's cellular phone number from Khurshid which helped them determine his location in Karnal. The police party today traced Bajrangi and his associate Yatender in Karnal and chased them to the Samaipur Badli area in Delhi where he was critically injured in the shootout with the police party and admitted to the Lok Nayak Jai Prakash Narayan Hospital.
