Shootout in Civil Lines
Two men walked upto jeweller Manmohan Singh's first-floor bedroom in the Under Hill Road area, near State Transport Authority, at Civil Lines, North District and asked if the car parked downstairs was his. He said yes. They then asked him if his name was Manmohan Singh. He said yes. After this the two men shot at him and escaped. Singh suferred a minor injury as the bullet merely scraped him, said the Civil Lines police. They have registered a case of attempt to murder.Photographer killed
A 30-year-old photo journalist working for Kuber Times lost his life in a road accident near Minto bridge on Thursday at around 11 p.m. Vinod Kumar was reportedly knocked down by a speeding Tata tempo. According to the police, Vinod was returning to his Pahargunj house when the tempo coming from the opposite side hit his scooter. Vinod was rushed to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital where he was declared brought dead. Policemen on patrol on the bridge were able to arrest the fleeing driver, later identified as Ranjeet Singh.
Six-year-old raped
A six-year-old girl was allegedly raped in the Okhla basti area of South Delhi yesterday evening. The minor was allegedly raped by an unemployed youth who was thrashed and handed over to the police by the victim's family. Suresh, who lives near the victim's hutment, is said to have entered her place when she was alone and forced himself on the six-year-old. In the meantime, the victim's mother returned, and raised an alarm.
Cassettes unit raided
The Crime Branch of police today raided a recording unit allegedly involved in the sale of pirated audio cassettes. Two recording machines capable of recording 12 cassettes each, two speakers, 6,660 audio cassettes including 371 master-copies and 204 pirated cassettes have been seized by the police. They have also recovered 28000 inlay cards, 3100 cassette covers, one screen printing board and four negatives. The Shakarpur police station has arrested Ram Avatar under the Copyright Act.
The police raided the premises F-22, Ground Floor, Laxmi Nagar on the basis of a complaint by the Super Cassettes Industries. On reaching the place, the police caught found them in the act of recording Hanuman Chalisa on one machine and Pyara Saja Hai Dwara Bhawani on another.
Fire destroys property
A minor fire in a hosiery shop-cum-residence in Gandhi Nagar destroyed property worth lakhs last night. No loss of life was reported in the incident. The police said that the fire started around 2:30 am due to a short circuit in the basement of the shop which soon engulfed the whole building. Five tenders were put in service and the fire was brought under control at around 3:50 am.
Auto-lifters arrested
The Jaffarpur police arrested two men alleged to be auto-lifters from Eshaour village yesterday. Sandeep, 18 and Rajesh, 20 are said to have stolen cars from the Vasant Kunj and Sarojini Nagar areas. A Maruti car has been recovered from them.
Housewife robbed of cash
Three youth robbed a Shiv Vihar resident of Rs 11,000, a gold ring, a pair of silver anklets, a pair of gold earrings and three sarees this afternoon. This happened when Gopal, a resident of galli no 9, Shiv Vihar, in the trans-Yamuna area, was away at his Chandni Chowk shop. He makes glass cases for watches. His 25-year-old wife Rajvati was at home when three youth knocked on the door and asked to meet her brother Narendra. They said that they had come to collect the glass for the watches. She refused to open the door and told them to go to the shop. However, the youth insisted that they let them in, after which she relented. They proceeded to make themselves comfortable asked Rajvati to prepare some tea, saying all along that they knew Narender well.
The next moment, the youth had tied her hands and legs, gagged her and dumped her inside a bed box. They were all unarmed. A robbery case has been registered at the Gokulpuri police station.
Counterfeit currency seized
M Madayan (35) and his associate Deen Dayalan were arrested by the R.K.Puram police on Thursday on the charge of possessing counterfeit Rs 100 denomination currency totalling around Rs 40,000. Madayan was arrested following a complaint by Indian Bank's Nanakpura branch manager that he was attempting to deposit fake currency into an account. Madayan identified Dayalan as an accomplice and he too was arrested.
Ex-constable attacked
A constable who was suspended recently was reportedly stabbed by unidentified youths in the Seemapuri area on Thursday. He was admitted to the G.T.B hospital. According to the police, Suresh Kumar was waylaid by four men who stabbed him. Suresh received injuries on his legs. The police have registered a case of attempted murder and investigations are on to trace the culprits.
Man robbed near bank
Even as the police drive against robberies near banks continued for the second day today, a retired Hyatt Regency employee was robbed of Rs 40,000 near the Palam branch of the State Bank of India around 11.40 this morning. Ratan Lal was walking towards his vehicle after withdrawing the cash when two scooter-borne men snatched the bag containing the money. A case of robbery has been registered at the Palam police station.
Three escape with car
Three persons fled with a man's car after availing themselves of a lift near the Ashram Chowk. Once inside the car, they told the man to drive to Kalindi Kunj. Though the vehicle passed by three police pickets, the driver could not raise an alarm as the assailants threatened to stab him.
When they reached a desolate spot in Kalindi Kunj, the three pushed the man out of the car and fled with the vehicle.
