BJP meet for caution on fiscal policies

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
SATARA, Sept 11: The executive committee of the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party today cautioned the State Government to take care while drafting future financial policies. The panel ridiculed the Congress' allegations about the ruling alliance pushing the State towards bankruptcy.

The BJP state executive headed by Suryabhan Vahadane met here on the eve of party's executive committee meeting tomorrow. Briefing media persons after the meeting, the party spokesman Prakash Jawadekar and State secretary, Atul Bhatkhalkar, said the meeting discussed a draft resolution protesting the Congress allegation. Senior party functionaries felt that the allegations were made to gain political mileage, they said.

``These elements do not want the alliance government to take the credit for the State's development,'' Jawadekar said.

The BJP spokesman pointed out that when the Congress was in power, the government sought eight overdrafts from Reserve Bank of India.

Besides former chief minister Sharad Pawar, every Congress chief minister had taken overdrafts, he said listing A. R. Antulay, Babasaheb Bhosale, Shivajirao Patil Nilangekar, and S B Chavan among them. "The alliance government has taken just one overdraft, and that too only for a week,'' Jawadekar said.

Jawadekar blamed the Congress for maligning the government's image and preventing it from availing funds.

The Rs 1000 crore Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation bonds were on the threshold of being launched and the Congress did not wish it well,he charged. Jawadekar also accused the Congress of being anti-farmers. He added,``Those who have done nothing in the past, have no right to criticise the government''.

The State Government will pay all the pending bills and carry out inspection of the projects, he stated.

The State had faced losses to the tune of Rs 14000 crore during the Congress regime, which have gone up to Rs 23000 crore, Jawadekar said. Despite this, the State's domestic product had gone up to Rs 1.60 lakh crore from the earlier Rs 1.30 lakh crore during the SS-BJP rule, he claimed.

Many BJP leaders were in Satara for the meet.
