Duma confirms Primakov as Russia Premier
The State Duma confirmed Yevgeny Primakov as new Prime Minister of Russia with 315 Deputies voting in his favour. A total of 63 Deputies voted against Primakov, who was nominated by President Boris Yeltsin to break a tense standoff with the Communist-dominated Lower House of Parliament.

Narayanan's parleys leave Germany unimpressed
Germany has said that its development aid to India, suspended after the nuclear tests, would not be resumed for the "time-being.'' German Chancellor Helmut Kohl had conveyed Bonn's position on the issue of German assistance during a meeting with President K R Narayanan on Tuesday.

Joshi rushes to Governor, maintains finances are sound
After the Governor Dr PC Alexander's unexpected move of summoning top bureaucrats to discuss Maharashtra's finances, it was Chief Minister Manohar Joshi's turn to spring a surprise by calling on the Governor for an unscheduled and prolonged meeting at Raj Bhavan last night. Joshi's meeting with Alexander assumes significance since the Governor, following reports in a section of the media alleging that the state was marching to bankruptcy, had summoned two senior officials.
