Davenport cruises to maiden Slam
Lindsay Davenport today capped a wonderful year by becoming the first American-born woman to win the U S Open women's singles title since Chris Evert Lloyd in 1982. Her 6-3, 7-5 win over the top-seeded defending champion Martina Hingis also ensured that Davenport was first time lucky in her maiden Grand Slam final.

Khurasia, Kumble save team the blushes
India crushed Canada in their second outing in the Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur yesterday. Batting first, India made 157 for nine in their allotted 50 overs. In reply, Canada were bowled out for 45 with Anil Kumble claiming four wickets. India now play Australia on Monday for a place in the semi-finals.

Last gasp goal keeps India's chances alive
India won 2-1 in their hockey match against South Africa in the Commonwealth Games at Kuala Lumpur yesterday. The win keeps India in contention for a semi-final berth. Meanwhile, in another match, Canada squandered a 3-0 lead gained within 20 minutes to draw 3-3 in a Pool B match against former world champions Pakistan.
