MSP crush Tipu Sultan

MUMBAI, SEPT 14: Maharashtra State Police (MSP) drubbed Tipu Sultan SC 6-1 in a Gulf Oil Senior Division football match at the Cooperage here today.

Earlier, Holiday Inn got past Western Railway 1-0.

A brace each by Abdul Abid and Abdul Faim formed the highlight of MSP's win. Abdul Faim's neat lob over Tipu goalkeeper Abrar Ansari off a cross from Nimai Roy in the fifth minute opened the flood gates. Five minutes later, Abid's clever shot from an acute angle brought the second goal.

Play-maker Abid made it 3-0 after fellow striker Santosh Shinde was brought down by the Tipu goalie in the box and referee Bosco Pereira awarded a penalty.

Faim won an opportunistic goal when Tipu 'keeper Ansari fumbled on a powerful cross off medio Xavier Bernard three minutes before the breather.

MSP increased the lead in the 72nd minute when Abid set Xavier in the box. The lanky mid-fielder collided with the 'keeper but the ball went in the goal off a rebound.

Mid-fielder Laxman Thakur slammed the sixth goal for MSPin the 78th scoring from an acute angle.

Ashok Negi brought some consolation for Tipu in the closing stages of the duel scoring off a melee.

Earlier, Holiday Inn's match-winner came about in a freak manner when a Western Railway defender's clearance struck Savio Alua and rebounded into the goal.

Sriram scores four

Chembur Stars trounced Pepkopal 8-0 in the league-cum-knockout of the Eighth Our Lady of Perpetual Succour Parish football tournament at the OLPS ground, Chembur, yesterday.

Sriram (4), Tito Mathews (3) and Mani were the goal-getters.

In another match, Perpetual Resort, comprising mainly of under-16 schoolboys, went down fighting to Ultimate Warriors 0-2. Winnith and Rahul Kanchan scored for the winners.

Irani nets winner

A lone goal by Delzad Irani turned out to be the match-winner for Poona Zorastrians against Cusrow Baug A in the final of the Cusrow Baug football tournament, sponsored by Union Press and Peekay Wines, at the Cusrow Baug Colony ground,Colaba.

Other results - Semi-finals: Cusrow Baug A 1 (Raymond Marfatha) bt Bharucha Baug 0; Poona Zorastrais 2 (Delzad Irani, Durand Engineer) bt Cusrow Baug B 0.

Ghotgalkar scores

Sushant Ghotgalkar shocked eighth seed Chaitanya Vaidya in the Open chess tournament, conducted by Anant Mitra Mandal, at Date Hall, Dombivli (E), today.

Twenty-six players out of 118, including top seed Vikramaditya Kamble, Sushant Banerjee, Amar Kamat, Hari Vaishampayan, Ashish Thatte and D R Naik, shared the lead.

Kamble checkmated Prachi Thite on the top board.

Manoj Tawde played a good game against Hari Vaishampayan (BSES) but mishandled the rook ending.

Mahesh Joglekar held fifth-seeded Saurabh Bhave to a draw.
