C'wealth Games was terrific exposure, says Srikkanth

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
CHENNAI, SEPT 16: Dubbing the trip to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, as a ``terrific exposure'' to the several inexperienced players in the team, Srikkanth regretted that India went down to Australia in the deciding league match without a fight.

``I would have been happier had we put up a fight against Australia, but the fact remains that we let them off the hook when they were 80-something for five. Our batting was a total failure,'' was his candid admission in a chat with The Indian Express, here on Wednesday, soon after his return from Malaysia.

He would not agree that the Indian campaign was a disaster, especially the game against the full-strength Aussies. ``I would not say that since I always believe in looking at the positive side. Barring a few like Sachin, Kumble, Robin and Jadeja, the rest were comparatively freshers, and I am sure, they would have gained a lot by the experience,'' he said.

When asked whether the speculation that the four key players -- Tendulkar, Kumble, Robin Singh and AjayJadeja -- would go to Toronto for the Sahara Cup after all, and, that India would not make it to the semis, came out true, he said: ``C'mon, I don't think that was it. Almost every match was a low-scoring affair because of the damp pitch on which the batsmen struggled. There was nothing more to it.''

Off the field, Srikkanth said the experience was enjoyable. ``Yes, it was a refreshing experience, living with so many other sportspersons. We attended the opening ceremony and on off days, some of the boys watched the badminton matches. Dining in a common hall was also a rare experience for us. Overall, it was a good trip. The arrangements were excellent,'' he said.

About Rohan Gavaskar not getting a look-in, Srikkanth felt that the youngster would get his chance. ``He is a good batsman and I am sure he will get his break. Since Amay Khurasia was batting well, we thought we must persist with him.''

In conclusion, Srikkanth, perhaps echoing the sentiments of cricket fans, said: ``I would have been veryhappy had we done well, especially against Australia.''
