MUMBAI, SEPT 16: A 10-day `Swadeshi week' to create and increase awareness of the role of Swadeshi enterprises in the country was launched today by the Swadeshi Jagran Manch. The week will be marked by a Chetna yatra and extensive public debates, informed the all India joint convenor of the SJM, S Gurumurthy at a press meet.
``Though many intellectuals and economists were dismissive of the idea of Swadeshi early on, it is being conceded that Swadeshi is not an inelegant idea,'' he said adding that changes was taking place not merely at the national level but even at the global level.
Pointing out the free fall of the currencies of Japan and Indonesia, he held that there is no `conceivable answer to the challenge that the free currency market poses to the World trade and to national economies. Even strong economies strenuously built over years can be turned bankrupt by the currency regime'.
Asked if he thought the Tata airlines venture with Singapore Airlines, which was withdrawn by the Tatas was`swadeshi', he said that if the majority stake was being held by the Tatas, it was a swadeshi venture. ``Normally, we don't prefer foreign equity for internal airlines,'' he said, adding, ``unless it is an NRI venture''.
Every year, the SJM holds Swadeshi week beginning from September 25 the birth anniversary of Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay and ending on October 2, Mahatma Gandhi's birthday.
