"It's a dog's life," is not what you expect to hear from the man who runs most part of the show at Rhythm House. But that's the way things are with Mehmood Curmally. Keeping Rhythm House going like a well-oiled machine is a dusk-to-dawn job, which leaves him no time for anything else.Associated with the name synonymous with music, Curmally has a link with music that dates back to his earliest memories. "All my life, I grew up with music pouring out of my house. I can identify with almost any kind of music," he says.
Expansion plans, however, do not include going commercial with their name, which is more of a generic term by now. "We do have a music label, `Rhythm House Classics', which we came up with about a decade ago. That was a time when classical music was not as freely available as it is now. We had a few titles, and also concentrated on providing opportunities to new people," says Curmally. One of the talents Rhythm House Classics lays claim to discovering is Veena Sahastrabuddhe. Their collectionright now, however, is limited.
"There was a vacuum for this in the market then, which no longer exists. Today, there are companies that work on seeking new talent, so it does not really make sense to continue," he says.
To further the usage of the brand name, however, is not part of the deal. Franchising, claims Curmally, is a `messy business', and best kept out of. Branching out in the retailing market, however, is on the cards.
"The suburbs, I feel, need a specialised music shop, and we are looking closely at that possibility. But right now, it's in the planning stage," he says, cagey about revealing more.
Between a hectic life and back-breaking hard work, there is no time for much else in Curmally's life. "I'm not a party animal, nor am I into the social scene. I have a three-year-old son, and I unwind at home with him and my wife," he smiles.
In between work and home, he finds time for a bit of golf, swimming and yoga. "There was a time when all of this didn't feature in my life. But I havegone through a lifestyle change in the past few years. Even lost about 20 kgs in the process!" he says, with a laugh.
