Indian women golfers gear up for Bangkok

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, SEPT 17: Preparations are on in full swing to select the three-member Indian lady golfers' team for forthcoming Asian Games at Bangkok.

This was revealed by Mrinalini Kochar, the council member of the Indian Golf Union Ladies Section (IGULS), while talking to The Indian Express at a press briefing in Mumbai to announce the Mahindra Golf Rankings.

While India has made appearances in the men's section at the Asian Games before, it is for the first time that a women's golf team will be sent. Eight probables are currently undergoing training at the first preparatory camp at the Classic Golf Course in Delhi under the supervision of professional Ajay Gupta. These include Parnita Garewal, Irina Brar (both from Chandigarh), Urvashi Sethi Sodhi (Madras), Anjali Chopra, Ayesha Kapoor, Shalini Malik, Nonita Lal Qureshi and Shruti Khanna (all from Delhi).

Parnita, Urvashi and Vandana Agarwal, who has withdrawn her name owing to personal reasons, formed the Indian team at the last Queen Sirikit Cup.Nonita was the non-playing captain of that squad.

The current 12-day camp concludes on September 27. The second and final camp will be held from October 10 to 22 which the IGULS intends to hold the same venue.

The players will be selected on the basis of six rounds to be played at the second camp and their performance at the Punjab Open which begins on October 24. ``The performances of the probables in the last few months, like Southern India Open and Malaysian Open will also be considered,'' said Kochar.

``A three-member team alongwith a reserve will be name on November 16 which will then undergo training from November 23 till the day they depart,'' she added. The reserve player, however, will go only if any member from the top three withdraw.

The ladies' golf event at the Games gets under way on December 10 at the par-72 Alpine Sports and Golf Club course, 14 kms from Bangkok.
