IES shuttlers steal show

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, SEPT 17: Indian Education Society's (IES) VN Sule English Medium School swept the honours at the Multigames inter-school badminton zonal finals at Sachivalaya Gymkhana today. The school won four finals -- U-14 boys and girls, U-17 boys and girls -- to qualify for the divisional tournament, a lead-up to the National School Games. The U-19 boys and girls titles were annexed by Ruparel and Podar respectively.

IES were served well by their reliable bets in each age group: Rohit Prabhu (U-14 boys), Swapnil Vyavaharkar (U-17 boys), Shivani Mayekar (U-14 girls) and Aditi Kulkarni (U-17 girls). Each of them won their opening singles with ease, ensuring that IES were stretched to three games in only one final.

The Ruia-Ruparel clash for the boys U-19 title had its moments of suspense though. Ruparel's Nihar lost his first singles to last year's school champion Amit Singh, but state player Anupam Singh won the doubles and the reverse singles to guide Ruparel home.
