MUMBAI, SEPT 17: A 255-page book The Ajanta Caves by renowned art historian Benoy K Behl which captures some of the finest works of the Buddhist art in all their glory and luminosity was released by Governor Dr P C Alexander at the Asiatic Society today.
The book which has been published by Thames and Hudson has over 200 illustrations, 189 in colour. Benoy is also into documentary films, photography, archeaology and conservation of monasteries. His latest is on the historic Ajanta caves which despite the onslaught of time, has survived as a symbol of the great beauty of India's rich artistic past.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that Benoy had re-discovered the Ajanta caves after John Smith, part of a hunting expedition in 1819 had stumbled upon the caves lying in a horseshoe shaped ravine of the Waghora river about 200 miles away from Mumbai. The paintings ranged in date from second century BC to sixth century BC. He lamented that the great heritage has been allowed todeteriorate.
