Rains wash away tracks, CR suburban services hit

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
MUMBAI, September 17: Central Railway services to the distant suburbs of Ulhasnagar, Thakurli and Ambarnath collapsed today after heavy rains washed away over 250 metres of rail track early Thursday morning.

At around 1.45 am, 200 metres of track was washed away due to heavy flooding at Kasara, between the Kalyan-Igatpuri section. Simultaneously at Ulhasnagar and Ambernath between the Kalyan-Pune section, over 50 metres of track were washed away. Train services in both directions collapsed by early morning.

Long distance trains, especially on the Central Railway, were hit the hardest. CR cancelled all its Pune-bound trains this morning. A total of 28 CR trains were cancelled while 17 others were partially cancelled while 14 trains were diverted.

Due to flooding of tracks near Vikhroli and Mulund, suburban services ran only between CST and Ghatkopar stations between 2 and 6 pm. However, after 6.30 pm, trains were run upto Kalyan. At several stations including Ambarnath and Kalyan, the water level rose ashigh as the platform.Surprisingly, harbour line services were virtually unaffected for most part of the day, though they were disrupted for half an hour at 4 pm and ran 10 to 15 minutes late in the evening.

Meanwhile, CR made arrangements of buses for stranded passengers of incoming trains at Nasik, Igatpuri, Kasara, Karjat and Lonavala. Free catering arrangements were also made for the passengers. Full refunds for cancelled tickets were also being made.

Necessary help was also being taken from the Indian Navy and the Maharashtra Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) to clear stranded passengers. Restoration work was on in full swing and was expected to be completed by 6 am, railway officials stated, adding that it would take three days to completely normalise rail traffic between Pune and Nashik.

A navy helicopter was pressed into service at Manor for relief operations, while two teams of divers were sent to Ambernath and Kasara following messages that the Konark and Kushinagar express trains werestranded as tracks were inundated under six feet of water, a defence release said.

On the Western line, long distance train movement was suspended between 9.25 and 11.25 am and later 1.30 am until 4 pm. Trains were slowed down to eight kilometres per hour after the rails were submerged in rainwater.

Long distance trains ran between two and eight hours behind schedule. The Rajdhani and August Kranti Express ran eight hours late. The Rajdhani scheduled to leave at 4.55 pm left at midnight. The 2961 Avantika Express from Mumbai Central to Indore left at 9 pm instead of 7.25 pm.

The 2934 Ahmedabad-Mumbai Central Karnavati Express was terminated at Borivli and was reversed from there for Ahmedabad. The Mumbai-bound Sayajinagari Express was reversed for Vadodara from Virar. The 9019 Dn Dehradun Express was rescheduled to depart from the Bandra terminus at 12.30 midnight.

Road traffic ran at a crawl for most part of today. Traffic on roads was heavy while the Khar and Milan subways remained waterlogged, causing diversions on SV Road.
