No clues yet in Narela "custody death" case

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, September 18: A 50-year-old man who was beaten up by the Narela villagers on Tuesday night as they suspected him to be a robber was later found to be an unemployed man roaming in the area. Ram Sakal Chauhan died in police custody under mysterious circumstances the next morning. An SDM enquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Even two days after his death, the circumstances which led to Chauhan's custody death remain a mystery. According to the police, the villagers had beaten him up with lathis suspecting him to be a robber.

The villagers had then informed the police control room. The PCR staff rushed the victim to Bara Hindu Rao hospital where he was discharged after treatment around 1 a.m. on Wednesday morning.

After he was discharged, the police arrested him under grounds of ``moving under suspicious circumstances''. He was kept in the lock-up at the Narela police station. According to a senior police officer: ``The only mistake that the police has done is that they kept him in the lock-up. But then had they let him go, he might have died elsewhere''.

But why was Chauhan not kept under a doctor's observation if his condition was so serious? Chauhan's condition reportedly deteriorated in the morning and he died on way to the hospital.

The police claim that the doctors at the Bara Hindu Rao discharged him after treatment saying that he was well enough to go home. If he was fine at the hospital, what happened at the police station which led to his death on way to the hospital? Ram Sakal Chauhan had apparently been fired from his job in a garments factory a few days earlier. As he had not been successful in finding another job, he was reportedly depressed. According to his family, there were earlier occasions when he did not return home. Tuesday night was one such night except that it was the last one.
