Gore finds campaign trail littered with `landmines'

ASSOCIATED PRESS
NASHUA (Boston), Sept 19: US Vice President Al Gore took his likely White House bid on the campaign trail and found it littered with landmines from his boss's sex scandal. As he touted healthcare and high-tech initiatives in this state which holds the first presidential primary vote, Gore was greeted yesterday with signs demanding President Bill Clinton either resign or be impeached.

``He's not going to resign nor should he,'' he said in an interview with the Concord Monitor newspaper, one in a series he gave here yesterday in a runup to his expected 2000 bid.

``Certainly the report that was delivered to Congress does not serve as a basis for impeachment,'' he said of the document independent counsel Kenneth Starr issued to Congress last week charging Clinton with perjury and other wrongdoing. Gore also warned about the likely political motivation behind the Congressional decision yesterday to release a videotape of Clinton testifying about his sexual relationship with Monica Lewinsky.

Meanwhile, thefirst company in Britain to publish the Starr report say that it is delighted at sales of a paperback version detailing the investigation into allegations against President Clinton. In two days, 95,000 copies of the book have been sold from an initial print run of 100,000, said publishers Orion yesterday.

A spokeswoman for the company said today that sales of ``Clinton the Starr report -- the uncensored evidence'' were `unprecedented'. ``It is incredible we have nothing to compare to this not even after Diana died and we brought out a special hardback book. All the big high street book shops are just clamouring for copies -- it's an unprecedented demand,'' she added.

Orion expect sales to level off after the initial surge of interest but anticipate printing of the book to continue and strong sales figures. Another edition of the Starr report will be printed by pocket books, a division of Simon and Schuster, and on sale in this country next week.
