MUMBAI, September 19: Union Bank of India (UBI) may well have lost a lot of friends today at the Cooperage. The bankmen, trailing 1-2 with a minute of regulation time left , indulged in what appeared to be churlish refusal to get on with their Gulf Oil Super Division league football match against Bengal Mumbai Football Club (BMFC) in protest of fading light. After a 11-minute hold-up, referee Manuel Pereira called off play. The Super Division Committee's decision on the matter is now awaited.
The episode once again exposed the incorrigible impunctuality of the organisers. The match began a good 40 minutes behind time after a delayed start to the Central Bank of India-Income Tax encounter which ended in a 2-0 win for the bankmen.
With just a minute to go for full-time, a yellow card incident that booked BMFC's Gurinder Pal Singh for a foul on Anil Tomar, gave UBI an opportunity to protest against the light.
BMFC were on the threshold of gaining their 26th point from their 12th match and UBI heading fordefeat, would have remained on 12 from 10.
But whether UBI would have been cast in the role of protestors had Suresh Mendon been on target from a penalty in the 43rd minute is only a matter of conjecture. The third miss from the spot this season deprived the bankmen the lead at half-time.
Came the change of ends, BMFC translated their domination into goals which came in the 54th and 57th minutes.
The two Nigereans upfront -- Emeka and Abdul Latif Seriki -- scripted the first with the latter scoring. It followed a centre from mid-fielder Gurinder Pal from the right. UBI, however, have qualms about the strike. They surrounded the referee, protesting against a raised flag which they claimed caused their defenders hesitancy. The argument doesn't seem to hold much water as Victor D'Souza appeared to do his duty to a foul a split instant earlier, overlooked by the referee who applied a good advantage.A goal out of nothing then gave BMFC a 2-0 cushion. Abhay Kumar crossing from the left found Emeka whose fainttouch punished a ball-watching goalkeeper Ansari.
Gumpe Rime in the BMFC goal warded off UBI's forays adeptly but the diminutive 'keeper had little answer to a flash raid that saw Ryan D'Souza square to Francis Pereira. The striker found the net in the 80th minute past a helpless custodian.
Second-half goals sink Income -Tax: CBI struck in the second half through Greville Crasto (63rd minute) and Prem Malhotra (77th) to gain 12 points from their 14th match. Income-Tax languish in the cellar at four points from nine.
Ansari verdict deferred again: The much-awaited ruling on the Salim Ansari transfer controversy will have to wait until Sept 23. The WIFA Super Division league committee, meeting today, were unable to arrive at a decision.
According to a WIFA spokesman, Mahindras coach SS Hakim's presence is required before the committee can decide on the matter. Hakim is presently outstation. The spokesman also informed that WIFA joint-secretary Wali Mohammad had responded to the SuperDivision Committee's query during a meeting on Sept 8 as to the course of action on the controversy.
Mahindras have been accused of playing goalkeeper Ansari before his transfer was expedited from Dempo (Goa). Ansari, apparently, had played in five matches of the Super Division before rivals Income-Tax lodged a protest. Mahindras claim that they received verbal approval from Mohammad to play Ansari.
