  • A 22-year-old man was shot at in Mariam Nagar slum colony behind the Nehru Centre, Worli this afternoon. However, he escaped with a single bullet injury.

Police informed that the incident occurred at Mariam Nagar at around 11.30 am when Shabinag Sharafat Ali was shot at by one Sunil Vasant Jathar (27), who stayed in the neighbourhood. Police have arrested Jathar and registered a case of attempt to murder against him.

A Country made revolver and five live cartridges have been recovered from Jatar. Police suspect previous enmity as the motive for the shootout. Ali was rushed to KEM Hospital.

    Bid to kidnap girl foiled

  • An alert mother foiled an attempt to kidnap her three-year-old daughter at Goregaon on Saturday evening. Aliya Shaikh was playing on an open ground at Motilal Nagar, Goregaon, when her mother Abida noticed that a girl and a boy, looking like rag pickers, lifted Aliya and started running away. Abida raised an alarm and neighbours managed tocatch the rag pickers and handed them over to the Goregaon police. Police found that the boy was 11 years old and the girl was nine and both could barely speak Hindi. They belonged to Manpura village of Godhra district in Gujarat and spoke in Kathiawadi Gujarati.

Police managed to extract the information that one Prashant who was standing nearby had promised them money if they picked up Aliya for him. However, when the crowd had gathered following Abida's alarm, Prashant had managed to escape. Both the children have been sent to Dongri Remand Home to be tried under Juvenile Act. The same evening another kidnap bid was foiled when a burkha-clad person tried to pick up a schoolgirl when the mother intervened. The culprit managed to escape.
