NEW DELHI, Sept 20: The annual rate of inflation fell sharply to 8.09 per cent despite steep hike in prices of primary food articles for the week ended September 5. Inflation, based on wholesale price index (WPI), had touched a 148-week high of 8.78 per cent (provisional) last week. The previous highest was 8.83 per cent in November 4, 1995.
During the reference week, inflation fell by 0.69 percentage points to 8.09 per cent (P) despite a 1.5 per cent increase in index for primary food articles. The overall index also grew by 0.4 per cent during the week.
In comparison, the inflation was at 3.98 per cent in the corresponding week of last year.
