Manipur boys rout Andhra in Subroto

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
NEW DELHI, September 20: Keinou High School from Manipur defeated a hapless St John's High School from Andhra Pradesh, banging in 14 goals without any reply from their opponents in the Subroto Mukherjee Cup Football tournament.

In another match possible today, Greenwood High School from Nagaland downed a determined Senior Secondary High School from the Car Nicobar Islands 3-1. Two of the scheduled matches could not be held as the heavens opened out this afternoon to make the ground slushy. The organisers have now scheduled those matches for the morrow.

Unlike in the previous years, this year's tournament has seen more one-sided matches than ever. Today was no exception. The Manipur schoolboys, with their speedy approach and the ability to seize the opportunity, came up trumps against a much weaker opponent in St John's School from Andhra Pradesh.

The Andhra boys had very little clue to what they were doing. They were neither sharp on the field nor the defence was good enough to stop the sturdy Manipur strikers. Worse was that the Andhra boys very quickly lost the ball possession paving the way for the rivals to strike at will. Though Manipur boys scored only four goals in the first session, they came back strongly on resumsption to pump in 10 times. They had several stars but the notable among them were Jotin, John and Ibomoha. The first two named scored three goals each with John completing a hat-trick.

Ibomoha struck twice along with Pishak and Ranjan, who had a brace each. Paolin and Raichandra contributed one each to their tally.

However, the second match saw some resistance coming from the Car Nicobar schoolboys but then they found a tough opponents in Greenwood boys. Azo, Kezhale Tuo and Moang scored a goal each for Nagaland and were seemingly closed in on without any reply from Govt schoolboys. But towards the end, the Car Nicobar boys mustered their strength to pull one back through Gomer.
