Canossa conquest at Azad Maidan

MUMBAI, September 21: Canossa Convent (Andheri) captured the girls under-16 trophy when they beat St Joseph's (Vikhroli) 1-0 in the final of the Inter-School football tournament, sponsored by Colgate Palmolive, at the MSSA-Castrol Schools Sports Centre, Azad maidan, today.

The all-important goal came two minutes from the end. Star Canossa forward Sumila Pereira was brought down in the box by a defender and the referee awarded a penalty. Elysha Barretto converted the spot-kick with a neat placement to the left of goalkeeper Liby Dominic to send her supporters and team-mates into raptures.

Canossa began well on the murky ground, but faded out after the first ten minutes of the 40-minute encounter. They weren't allowed a single goal view by the St Joseph's defence, in which Khushboo Goyal stood out.

St Joseph's dictated terms thereafter but failed to convert three chances that came their way. Once when all seemed lost for Canossa, goalkeeper Priyanka Chordia brought off a fine save. In the second-half,Canossa dictated terms almost right through and did not look back till they earned the penalty, which fetched them the match-winner.

Noronha's tricks
