Gem of a lady

Sujata Assomull
This weekend, one of the most talked about events was the Marina B jewellery show at the Taj. Held at the Taj's Crystal room, all the city's glitterati attended. Spotted there were Tanya Godrej-Dubash, Hasina Jethmalani, Rhea Pillai-Dutt and Queenie and Raja Dhody. Also keeping a close eye on the designs were some of the city's best known jewellery designers such as TBZ's Nirmal Zaveri, Farah Khan, Neelam Kothari (who has recently started designing her own line of jewellery) and Paulomi Sanghavi. Bollywood stars like Dilip Kumar and Poonam Dhillon were also there.

But the real celebrity was the lady behind the show -- Marina B. Part of the famous Bulgari clan, she broke away from the family 20 years ago, to design jewellery under her own brand name. Today, her stores are all over the world, and Mumbai adds its name to her chain. Marina still designs jewellery herself and her client list includes stars like Sophia Loren and designer Carolina Herrera.

Marina wears only her designs and is normally clad inhaute couture, with her favourite designers being Mila Schon and Givenchy. "My designs are for the modern working woman," says Marina, who is really excited about her new project. "I have never been to India before, so the idea of coming here really excites me," she says. She already has a handful of Indian clients who regularly patronise her stores abroad. Most of her range will be available in Mumbai, except for the steel and diamond-studded jewellery.

Explains Marina, "I was told that steel would not be acceptable here as Indians prefer gold. Also, I believe you cannot import diamond studded jewellery."

Marina hopes to return to the city soon, as this trip has been choc-a-bloc with work, leaving her with no time to sightseeing. "I am afraid I just have not had the time to look around," she says.
