SEC subsidy extended
Surat: Union Textiles Minister Kashiram Rana announced today evening that the state government would extend by 60 days the subsidy given to the Surat Electricity Company (SEC). The subsidy of the government to the SEC expired on August 31 and will now be extended until October-end. The subsidy was introduced when the tariff difference between the Gujarat Electricity Board (GEB) and the SEC was equalised from January 1 1996.

Date advanced
District Education Officer (DEO) Natwarsinh Parmar, in a statement issued here, has said that all schools and colleges, where flood waters had receded, would begin from Wednesday. The authorities had earlier stated that all schools and colleges would remain closed until September 27, but since most areas were already cleared of dirt, the date has been advanced. Meanwhile, the civic body today maintained that 95 per cent of the city had been cleared of garbage.

Contest winner
Kartik Parekh, a 7th standard student of Lancer Army School, London House, Surat, won five gold medals in swimming in 100m, 200m butterfly and 4 x 100 m free relay and medley relay in the inter-school swimming competition held in Rajkot recently. He also won two silvers in 100m butterfly and 100m breast stroke and a bronze in 200m freestyle.

AIR programme
The All India Radio Ahmedabad-Vadodara will broadcast on Saturday a programme of the Special Chief Engineer (Generation) of the GEB answering queries regarding energy audit and how to save electricity. The programme will be broadcast at 7.20 pm in Khedut Mandal. GEB consumers can dial 648495 on every Friday between 7 pm and 9 pm .
