Dutta engineers COEP past Ness

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Sept 22: In an encounter fought on even terms College of Engineering Pune (COEP) edged out Ness Wadia 3-2 to enter the quarter-finals in the PCZSC Inter- Collegiate hockey tournament which began at the SP College ground today.

COEP's left-out Nagraj Shankar put the team ahead in the 6th minute, after he capatalised on a through pass from Datta Pimpale just inside the 25-yard zone.

COEP did not have to wait long as they increased their tally eight minutes later through Satish Suttati who converted his teams second penalty corner, with a neatly executed push past custodian Ritesh Shetty.

With the first half going COEP's favour, five minutes after resumption centre-forward Jitendra Chande made it 1-2 for Ness Wadia pushing home a cross sent in by centre-half Ritesh Basin.

Three minutes later, Kevin Braganza netted the equaliser after he picked up a loose ball on the edge of the circle and finished off with a push that beat keeper Dhruv Bhate.

COEP settled the issue in the dying minute of the game through Dutta Pimple who scored of a solo effort.

In the opening match, Symbiosis Arts and Commerce College registered a solitary goal win over Modern College.

The day definitely did not as Modern planned as luck totally deserted them. Their opponents custodian Sandeep Pawar saved atleast six sure-shot goals exposing the inadequate sting their forwards lacked after getting into the scoring area. The match-winner was scored by Abbas Tinwala mid-way into the second-half.

A total of 17 teams are participating in the competition spread over three days.
