CHENNAI, SEPT 25: Union Defence Minister and Samata Party leader George Fernandes today termed as a ``highly concocted story'' and baseless the charge made by All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) general secretary J Jayalalitha and Congress leader Sharad Pawar that the BJP-Samata Party combine was trying to split the Rastriya Janata Dal (RJD) and form a Government in Bihar.Talking to media persons at the Chennai airport on arrival from New Delhi to attend a Parliamentary consultative committee meeting on Defence, Fernandes said ``there is no substance at all (in the charge)''.
Asked if all the coalition partners of the BJP agreed that Rabri Devi Government should go, he said ``I cannot speak for all, but as far as I know, there isn't anyone who has taken a negative view. And for those who are today shouting from the rooftops, they should be reminded that Gujral and Deve Gowda had coalition Governments which survived with the support of the Congress.
The Samata leader, however, added thatthere was no difference as far as the allies were concerned. ``Inside the Cabinet there has been a decision. Who took what position in the Cabinet is not to be discussed in public.''
Fernandes said ``All those who are today taking positions against our decision were the ones to take the decision to dismiss the Uttar Pradesh and Gujarat Governments under the same Article 356. So let them not make their principles momentary concerns. Nor should they wear them on their shirts to use or wherever else they would like to wear them. If they are principled opponents, then they must explain why they did a Gujarat where they dismissed the Government or why they did a Uttar Pradesh, where they dismissed a Government.''
When pointed out that he was against the use of Article 356 when he was in the Opposition, he said, ``Yes I have been and I am against the use of Article 356 when it is unjustified. But if there is one place where Article 356 is justified, it is Bihar.''
Fernandes said the Government had taken thedecision not on political considerations at all, but purely to save Bihar. ``And when I say Bihar, I am not talking of the rivers and hills there. I am talking of hundreds of millions of people of Bihar.''
