Six get RI in mandrax case

NAGPUR, SEPT 25: Six persons were sentenced to 10 years' rigorous imprisonment and two of them fined Rs 5 lakh each in connection with the seizure of Rs 40 crore worth of mandrax.

Delivering the order yesterday, Akola Additional Sessions Judge S L Bhagat, who found them guilty under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985, said the two would have to undergo an additional sentence of three years in case they failed to pay the amount.

The remaining four have been ordered to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh each or undergo one more year of sentence. The accused were, however, relieved of the charges of conspiracy, while three others were acquitted of all charges.

A joint team of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence and Central Excise, in a raid on Vinit Organics Plant in Amravati in 1995, had seized 1215 kg of methaqueline, 1500 litres of semi-finished metaquelene liquid and other materials including 1932 kg of mandrax tablets and 506 kg of methaquelene powder.

The accused were, RameshAgrawal, his three employees Sitaram Gawde, Anil Zade and Bhaskaran Nair and Prashant Rathi of Vinit Organics Ltd, Amravati, along with his worker Suresh Sharma.

Those acquitted were Kamalkishore Rathi, Kasam Merchant and Kantilal Jogani.
