Challenger Trophy teams on Oct 5

MUMBAI: The national cricket selectors will choose the three teams -- India Seniors, India A and India B -- for the NKP Salve (Challenger) Trophy day-night cricket tournament on October 5, the fifth and final day of the Irani Cup tie at Bangalore between Karnataka and the Rest of India.

The four-day tournament, commencing at Ahmedabad on October 15, assumes importance as the selectors are to choose the Indian team on October 18 for the nine-nation ICC Knock-Out Tournament.

Feroz in lead

BANGALORE: Feroz Ali, overcame the ill-effects of a bad back to coast into the lead on the second day of the McDowell Centenary golf championships at the Bangalore Golf Course on Friday. Lying one stroke behind leader Shiv Prakash at the start of play today, the Calcutta professional turned up a three-under par card on top of his four-under par on the opening day for a total of 135 to steer a clear four strokes ahead of second placed Arjun Singh.

Results (after 36holes): Professionals: 135 -- Feroz Ali (67+68); 139 -- Arjun Singh (69+70); 140 -- Shiv Prakash (66+74), Vijay Kumar (69+71); 141 -- Basad Ali (69+71); 143 -- Devendra Patel (71+72); 144 -- Manohar Dike (73+71); 145 -- Rohtas Singh (71+74); 147 -- Ali Sher (76+71), Sanjay Kumar (75+72), Asgar Ali (72+75). Amateurs: 156 -- David D'Souza (79+77); 157 -- Ved Manu Moola (80+77); 158 -- Nawab Singh (77+81); 159 -- Amitabh Poddar (84+75).

Kalra ahead

CHENNAI: Sheeraz Kalra fired an impressive four-under 68 to lead after the second day of the AV Thomas Gold Cup amateur golf championship at the Cosmopolitan club links here on Friday.

Leading scores: Sheeraz Kalra (Lucknow) 141 (73,68); Simar Jeet Singh (Delhi) 143 (74,69); Digvijay Singh (Meerut) 144 (75,69); Anitya Chand (Delhi) 145 (74,71); Harmeet Kahlon (Chandigarh) 146 (72,74); Tarun Sardesai (Bangalore) 146 (70,76).

Asiad football

NEW DELHI: India have been put along with next World Cup co-host Japan in group C for thepreliminary round of the Asian Games men's football competition, as per the provisional entries received by the organisers.

Lowly Yemen is the third country in the group the league matches of which will be played at Trang.

WBRA win

CHENNAI: WBRA prevailed over Services by just half a second in the junior sculls category (men) in the Junior National Regatta. Services also won the last race of the day in the junior four's section against Tara by one second.
