Rich harvest expected at Asiad

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
AHMEDABAD, SEPT 25: A rich harvest on the green baize is expected for the Indians at the coming Bangkok Asian Games. Former national champion Arvind Savur who is preparing the probables promises a good show ``despite the constraints faced at the just concluded camp.'' Also giving tips to the players at the camp is former world billiards champion Michael Ferreira.

The game, making it's debut at Bangkok, will have four sections -- billiards, snooker, carrom and pool. And with abundance of talent at India's disposal, it was a God-sent opportunity to pocket a chunk of the 30 medals at stake. But true to tradition, the government is indifferent in tapping this potential. The camp was held minus the pool and carrom tables, denying players a chance get used to this less popular of the green baize games.

But Savur, who is here to compete in the World Professional Billiards Championship, said despite that the chances of Indians getting a medal were bright considering their overall skills.

The camp at Bangalorewas the last in the series of four which were held in the past year. Talking in view of the performance of the players in the last two National Championship and on their current form, the monitoring committee of the Billiards and Snooker Federation of India shortlisted 16 players for the camp.

Based on the performances of the players at the camp, India will send a 10-member team to Asian Games. But Savur insists that all those who were called for the camp should be send to Bangkok, three for each sections and the rest as standbys.

The main challenge for India at the Asiad would come from Thailand and Pakistan. Mohammed Yusuf, the Asian Snooker champion from Pakistan, will be a force to reckon with and so will be James Watana of Thailand.

The green baize event will be played from December 6-19.
