KARACHI, SEPT 25: A career-best 221 (260b, 24x4, 6x6) by opener Michael Slater helped Australia to reach 438 for five against Karachi on the first day of the four-day match today. The Waugh twins, Steve (92, 145b, 6x4) and Mark (66, 94b, 7x4, 2x6), further boosted the Australian innings. They fully exploited the pedestrian Karachi attack by maintaining a run rate of more than 4.5 an over.
But there was disappointment for skipper Mark Taylor who scored only one on a wicket tailor-made for the batsmen. Last time Taylor played here four years ago, he notched up a pair.
Slater, dropped on the third ball of the match and again on 74, added 132 with Mark Waugh for the second wicket and 221 with Steve Waugh for the third wicket.
Wrist spinners Afridi and Ali Husain Rizvi shared four wickets between them. Afridi conceded 79 runs for his two wickets while Rizvi gave away 136 runs from 32 overs.
