PUNE, Sept 25: Makeshift custodian Kenneth Fernandes successfully effected two saves in the tie-breaker to help Symbiosis College of Arts & Commerce score a 6-4 win over Nowrosjee Wadia and enter the semi-final of the IME Inter-Collegiate Invitational football tournament at the ILS Law College ground today. In another encounter, host's Institute of Management Education scored a solitary goal win over Marathwada Mandal College of Arts and make the last-four.
In the Nowrosjee-Symbiosis encounter Mohan Natrajan and Prashant Ghatge marshalled their defence excellently to keep their resurgent opposition at bay.
Both teams at the end of full-time shared one-goal apiece which came off the penalty-conversions. Mohan Natrajan opened Nowrosjee's account in the 13th minute when referee Nilesh Natu pulled up defender Prashant Ghatge for a rough tackle on Thoktom Singh.
After lemon time Symbiosis changed their strategy and went into the attack mode, but the Wadian mid-fielders did a good job in marking their players. Kenneth Fernandes schemed the ball well, and was the livewire of his team on the left-flank. On one instance his solo on the flank saw his cross land on defender Prashant Ghatge's hand inside the box which resulted in a penalty. Surendrapal Singh who took the kick restored parity. In the tie-breaker, Prashant Ghatge, Vineet Johnny, Amit Uchil, Alistair Mendonca and Kenneth Fernandes netted for Symbiosis, while Yogesh Lad and Ashitosh Gujar netted for Nowrossjee. Durand Engineer and Mohan Natrajan however fell prey to Kenneth's timely anticipation to hand the match to Symbiosis.
In the other encounter, IME forwards distributed the ball well, made inroads but failed to get past MMCA custodian Amol Hatkar who was excellent under the bar.
On one instance, Ranjit Thite sent in a crisp cross from the right had Amol rise to thwart the sure-shot goal at the second post. MMCA's forward lacked control. Krishna Nair missed a sitter as his right-footer was hastily blasted over the bar.
The lone goal came off the boots of Ranjit Thite in the 45th minute after his first-time effort crashed onto the net after left-out Ravi Shetty did the spade-work.
