Abhay loses; wins tourney

EXPRESS NEWS SERVICE
PUNE, Sept 25: Sandeep Gohad of Marathwada Mitramandal College of Commerce (MMCC) stunned overnight leader Abhay Karnataki to draw levels with the top-seed with eight points apiece in the PCZSC Inter-Collegiate chess tournament at the Vidya Bhavan College, here today.

However, superior progressive points 39 as against Abhay's 44 deprived, Sandeep a first year student of the top-spot.

Soon after making initial moves with the Nimzo Indian opening, Sandeep, black, offered a draw to Abhay and repeated it twice, which was declined.

Later, Abhay committed a mistake of overlooking black's `e5' pass pawn, which gave enough momentum to Sandeep's pieces in building his attack. Abhay finally resigned after 54 moves.

Results (IX Rd)
Abhay Karnataki (Fergusson, 8) lost to Sandeep Gohad (MMCC, 8); Sagar Chivate (COEP, 6) lost to Udayan Bapat (COEP, 6.5); Amol Sonawane (COEP, 6) bt Sunil Barve (AISSM Engg, 6); K Vishwashankar (MIT, 6.5) drew with Aditya Abhyankar (COET, 6.5); Amol Sugandhi (Modern, 6) lost to Amogh Sarpotdar (COEP, 7); Farrukh Ahmed (Poona, 6) lost to Hariketan Chitale (IIM, 7); Ameya Divekar (COET, 5.5) lost to Utpal Sasane (MMCC, 6.5); Mandar Sane (Graware, 6.5) bt Mohammed Saif (VIT, 5.5).
