PUNE, Sept 25: Sandeep Gohad of Marathwada Mitramandal College of Commerce (MMCC) stunned overnight leader Abhay Karnataki to draw levels with the top-seed with eight points apiece in the PCZSC Inter-Collegiate chess tournament at the Vidya Bhavan College, here today.However, superior progressive points 39 as against Abhay's 44 deprived, Sandeep a first year student of the top-spot.
Soon after making initial moves with the Nimzo Indian opening, Sandeep, black, offered a draw to Abhay and repeated it twice, which was declined.
Later, Abhay committed a mistake of overlooking black's `e5' pass pawn, which gave enough momentum to Sandeep's pieces in building his attack. Abhay finally resigned after 54 moves.
