CHANDIGARH, Sept 25: It was a memorable occasion for the mentally retarded sports persons who had assembled for the Special Olympics third National Games which began at the Punjab University campus here today. Through the sporting events they conveyed their ability to overcome the odds. The spirit to fight was very much prevailent amongst the children. Some fell down while others tumbled over, on way to the finish line but in the end each participant, stood on the victory podium.``Since they are special children, they need special attention. We have decided to present them with a medal even though they might lost, giving them encouragement,'' disclosed a official.
Earlier, Lt Gen (retd) B K N Chhibber, Governor of Punjab and Administrator, UT declared the meet open.
Teams from Nepal, Taiwan and Phippilines have also arrived.
Sports persons from Maharashtra bagged most of the gold medals at stake on the opening day of the meet in the athletics events held today.
